President Muhammadu Buhari will, on Thursday, inaugurate the Nigerian Navy (NN) Sports Complex in Lagos.
The Director of Naval Information (DINFO), Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, announced this during a visit at The Nation’s head office yesterday.
According to the DINFO, the sports complex located at Navy Town in Ojo, is the first of its kind in the history of the service.
He said the complex would host the 12th Nigerian Navy Games aimed at further enhancing the physical fitness and well-being of personnel who would come from various commands, units and bases across the country.
Ayo-Vaughan, who was received by the Managing Editor for Editorial Services, Lawal Ogienagbon, on behalf of Managing Director Victor Ifijeh, said the visit was in recognition of the support the Nigerian Navy has received from the newspaper over the years.
He urged The Nation not to relent in its commitment to fair and accurate reportage of activities of the Navy, assuring that the service would ensure timely response on issues.
The DINFO also listed some of the successes of the Navy under the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, emphasising that maritime crimes had been drastically reduced and Nigeria delisted from the International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) piracy hotbed lists.
In line with the vision of the CNS, Ayo-Vaughan said the Navy would continue to deny oil thieves and other economic saboteurs access to the country’s maritime space to perpetrate their criminality.
